Photographing life’s most intimate moments through the wet collodion process is unlike any other experience. Recently, a young couple visited my studio, still glowing with the happiness of their wedding a few days earlier. They brought their wedding outfits, and together we created a portrait that would forever capture the essence of their bond. Using the wet plate collodion process, each image becomes a singular work of art, filled with the richness of handmade detail and imperfections that add depth and character to the final result.
This process is slow and meticulous, but that’s what makes it so special. Each moment spent preparing the plate, capturing the image, and developing it by hand is infused with meaning. It’s not just a photo; it’s a tangible piece of history, a timeless keepsake that connects the past and present. The couple’s love and joy are etched into the very fabric of the metal plate, creating a lasting testament to their union.
In an age where everything is digital and instantaneous, creating these handcrafted portraits reminds me — and them — of the beauty in things that take time. It’s a privilege to preserve such meaningful moments in a way that feels raw, real, and truly authentic. There is something profound about being able to hold a memory in your hands, knowing that it will endure for generations.
